Have you ever wondered how to choose a unique engagement session location? One that’s perfect and unique to your relationship? This can be such an overwhelming topic for my couples and I wanted to shed some light on the best way to go about it! Kate and Reilly were so lovely and intentional in choosing Patapsco State Park for their session. They really spent a good deal of time making sure the location they ultimately chose was perfect and these tips can help just about anyone!
1. Be intentional about the look you’re going for
It’s so easy to live in the DC Metro area and pick the monuments. Everyone takes photos there, after all! As much as I love the monuments I know they’re not the perfect fit for everyone! Before making a decision, spend some time thinking about what makes your relationship special and the memories and places that are meaningful for you. Do you like to hike together? Do you treasure your time sipping coffee together and reading at a cafe? Does paradise look like a day at the beach together? If the location holds special meaning for you your session will be a breeze!
2. Visit the location to visualize what your photos might look like
I always recommend that my couples visit potential engagement session locations before officially picking one. It’s the only way to get a true feel for the different characteristics of that particular spot. You’ll be able to focus on how a particular location makes you both feel, and what you love about it. You’ll also be able to earmark specific spots that you both think are beautiful and exciting! I love when my couples have a bit of familiarity with their engagement session location. Kate and Reilly actually drove from Pennsylvania to Patapsco State Park a few times before falling in love with these particular ruins! And I never would have known they existed if they hadn’t thought to visit the site ahead of time!
3. Ask your photographer for help
If you’ve racked your brains, searched all over google, pinned a thousands pins, and still can’t decide… ask me for help! I love collaborating with couples on the perfect engagement location because I’ve shot as so many locations over the years. I even created an in-depth engagement session planning guide exclusively for NSP Couples which includes some of my favorite spots to shoot in. These are the locations I know photograph beautifully and broken down by category into the different types of vibe my couples typically as about! There’s even fun and helpful goodies about outfit planning, how to time your session, and other tips and tricks to make you session fun!
And that’s that! All of my best tips about how to choose a unique engagement session location for YOU! Now go enjoy some of my favorite photos from Kate and Reilly’s epic session at The Ruins at Patapsco State Park!
